Enhancing Patient Safety While Preventing Employee Injury

The Benefits of Atlas

San Francisco Patient Transport

Atlas provides trained lift teams for your institution on a contract-outsourced basis. We like to say, “We hire like you hire,” which simply means we hire the highest caliber of employees, just as you do. All of our employees are EMT certified, and in many instances have been paramedics for years. Our staff members are trained on all commercially available lifting and transport equipment, and can also be trained in hazardous material decontamination and combative patient de-escalation. Our employees remove much of the liability from the hospital, shifting it to Atlas. These professionals are on the Atlas payroll, so there is no increase in personnel or hospital staff headcount. Their work is directed by the nursing and other staff in the hospital and monitored by Atlas managers and regional supervisors, thus removing the supervisory cost for the hospital. Our mission is to enhance patient safety while preventing employee injury. In pursuit of this mission, we provide our clients with the 3 S’s:

Safety for Patients:

  • Reduction in patient injury
  • Increased patient satisfaction and Press Ganey scores
  • Reduced hospital stays

Satisfaction for Staff:

  • Reduction in nurse turnover
  • Increase in morale
  • Reduction in nurse injuries

Savings for Hospitals:

  • Reduction in lost work days
  • Lower worker’s comp
  • Lower litigation costs and compensation payments

In many instances, the implementation of lift teams has resulted in up to an 80% reduction in days away/days restricted, a 65% reduction in claims, a 90% reduction in average cost per injury, and an 89% reduction in average cost per injury. Combining indirect and direct costs, lift teams have been proven to save several times the cost of their implementation and annual operation. Nurse morale has risen in every instance when lift teams have been implemented.  In addition, “Zero Lift” Legislation is under consideration at both the federal and state levels that would mandate hospitals provide both lift equipment and trained lift teams in order to create  “zero lift” environments.

Atlas Lift Tech provides an initial audit of your facility and recommendations for appropriate staffing levels and coverage for the institution. Within our contract, we establish performance standards and timetables for Atlas workers. As part of our services, we place a lift team in your facility, train the nursing staff on how to use the service, and conduct in-service seminars and “lunch and learns” with hospital and departmental staff. Finally, we monitor our staff to ensure they meet the performance metrics established. Our field supervisors work with our teams in your facility throughout the duration of the contract, coordinating operations with your nurses, managers, and floor staff. Additionally, we can provide a payback and ROI analysis on our lift teams.

Our staff members are trained extensively prior to facility deployment to ensure that they perform safe lifts, using proper lifting techniques and equipment of all types. They undergo initial and ongoing physical tests for agility and strength and are randomly drug tested to ensure that they are the highest quality employees. All of our employees in your facilities are insured and bonded. We don’t just work for your hospital—we work to become an integral resource within your hospitall system.
